In the Somme there is a
memorial plaque commemorating American troops in Amiens’ impressive
cathedral.
|
In Cantigny there
is the memorial to the 1st division which was inaugurated in August 1937. Here
the first American combat of WW1 took place and 1068 soldiers were left injured
or dead.
In Le Hamel, an
area well worth a visit for other nationalities too, we have the site of the
first medal of honour won by an American soldier in WW1. This area was captured
by American and Australian troops on 4th July 1918.

In Chaulnes there
is the American Red Cross memorial. |
Moving into the Aisne, the neighbouring department (state), you can visit Bony, Bellicourt and Riqueval, all near to each other. Bony has a large American cemetery with 1844 graves, plus a memorial chapel bearing the names of 333 missing. Bellicourt has the largest American memorial dedicated to those who fought in the Battles on the Somme and is situated on a section of the Hindenburg line captured by American soldiers in September 1918. The Tennessee memorial in Riqueval is dedicated to the 30th division and there is the tunnel and museum to visit nearby.
