SOUTH AFRICA |
There is a plaque
acknowledging the efforts of Sth African troops in Amiens Cathedral.
However, the place that will interest South African visitors the most is
Longueval, near to the limit between the Somme and the Pas-de
-Calais departments (provinces). The South African memorial and museum is in a
beautiful, inspiring setting. All around is Devil’s Wood, as the soldiers
called it, (really Delville Wood) a site where ferocious hand-to-hand fighting
took place.
In addition, many South
African soldiers are remembered on the Thiepval monument which is the
British Memorial to the missing soldiers of the Somme battles.
