UNITED KINGDOM

It is with some hesitation that we have separated details, where possible, of the different regiments fighting under the Union Jack. After all, they were representing the same nation. Having said that, it does make it easier for those of you interested in particular regiments to find relevant details, but please remember that these soldiers were all fighting side by side along the Western Front and a northern English regiment could easily find itself alongside a Welsh or Scottish regiment etc..

There are sites that all visitors will find interesting and these are:

Thiepval - the monument to the missing of the Somme.

This is the biggest British monument to all those who gave their lives and were never found.

Nearby there is the Pozières tank memorial dedicated to the first tanks to leave this site for use in battle.

Also nearby is the Lochnagar crater in La Boisselle, signposted as La Grande Mine. Here the area where a mine was blown to mark the beginning of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916 has been preserved. So many other craters were filled in and forgotten.

The towns of Albert and Péronne should be on your itinerary. Albert was highly significant during WW1 as it was just behind the British Front lines, having been taken from the Germans. Both towns boast museums to the First World war. Ours is already known to you through this website, of course.

A trip to the Butte de Warlencourt in the  Pas-de-Calais (neighbouring county) will show you where the first Somme Offensive came to an end in Nov. 1916. So many lives were lost for so little land.

Finally, you are encouraged to look at the other nations’ sites (eg. Canada) to find out where the Memorial Parks with preserved trenches are. These are not to be missed !
