1st July is a highly significant day in the Somme as it marks the anniversary of the start of the Battle of The Somme when the Front line troops went over the top to attack the German positions. Events begin at 7.30 am with a very moving ceremony at the Lochnagar Crater in La Boisselle. The service is attended by people representing French, German and British authorities.

The ceremony at Thiepval is normally at 10 or 10.30am. Check with the Office de Tourisme in Albert for details.

The ceremony at the Ulster Tower is normally in the afternoon. Again, contact the Office de Tourisme in Albert for details.

People tend to go to two or more of these ceremonies on the one day. Dignitaries, such as the British Ambassador, attend too.

11th November is Remembrance Day (the anniversary of the end of WW1). This is a Bank Holiday, when soldiers from The First World War are honoured. Contact the local Town Hall to see what events are planned. There will always be a service at the local cenotaph.
